Passengers (2016) Movie Review

A spacecraft en route to a colony planet malfunctions and from it, two passengers are awakened 90 years early. It stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.

What a shame about this movie. It had such an amazing premise but with reshoots, messy rewrites and editing this film fell so short of what it could have been. It this was an indie, small film I imagine it would have been totally different however it had the two biggest stars of the year and they had to go all 'Hollywood' with a love story.

There are several other ways this could have worked better. One could be the order of the scenes in editing. If someone were to reedit, you could turn this into something amazing. Imagine waking up 90 years early, thinking you are completely alone and then after a year, finding someone else on the ship. There's no way for you two to get out - but do you try? This is how the trailer makes it seem, and they could add in the massive twist in the third act and completely blow the audience's minds.

But alas, they don't. They tell it from the beginning and make it into a genre which it shouldn't have been and it completely spoilt the movie.

I would watch this film if you like the cast, as they do seem to have good chemistry and they are good, however if you are looking for a sci fi action thriller style film, this sadly won't be the one for you.

  1. Ahhh great review! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I agree it's not much of a sci fi thriller. I loved the ending but there were other parts I thought they could do so much more with :D xx
